Seishiro and Subaru
WARNING! MAJOR SPOILERS HERE!
Both Seishiro Sakurazuka and Subaru Sumeragi are from the series Tokyo Babylon.
They're powerful onmyouji (yin-yang magicians) and heads of the respective
Sakurazukamori and Sumeragi clans, families that have been
practising onmyoujitsu (yin-yang magic) since centuries for the sake of the country.
The only difference is that, whereas the Sumeragi clan uses white magic to protect Japan and his
people, the Sakurazukamoris are actually a one-member only clan who kills on
account of the Japanese Government using black magic. The two of them are consequently
opposites both in the aim of their magical arts and inner nature: Subaru is
a shy, polite, soft-hearted and somewhat melancholic kind of boy, sensitive
and always ready to carry the weight of other people's pains and hardships -
which is not uncommon, given that, working as an exorcist, he is constantly
in touch with people's grieves. On the other hand, Seishiro is a cold-hearted
assassin, unable to recognise the difference between rubbish and human bodies.
His first meeting with Subaru occurred when he was barely eighteen, and the
boy was just nine. Subaru casually found himself under Seishiro's illusory cherry
tree, and surprised the young man in the act of killing a little girl. At that time, Seishiro explained him that the reason why cherry flowers are pink
is the blood of the corpses buried under cherry trees. Subaru's pure
looks appealed the dark onmyouji in such a way that he decided to make a bet
with him: in case they'd meet again - he would try to fall in love with him
for a year, since his heart was just the reverse of his own. If he failed, Subaru
would end up like the corpse behind him. Until the day their paths crossed again,
Seishiro marked him as his prey using the inverted pentagrams of the Sakurazukamori
clan, making sure to cancel Subaru's memory of their encounter - though shards of it would often visit Subaru during the year of the bet. From that
day on, Subaru's grandmother ordered her nephew to always wear a pair of gloves
and never pull them off. No-one but her knew that was a protection on them, in order
to conceal him from the Sakurazukamori's eyes, which later revealed to
be a somewhat useless care, since Seishiro not only managed to find Subaru,
but also succeeded in gaining his trust, along with his twin sister's, Hokuto
- an eccentric and apparently carefree girl that would act like a cupid once
she discovered Seishiro declared he fancied her brother - introducing himself
as a witty and easygoing vet whose favourite hobby was to teasigly tell Subaru
he's in love with him. Although Subaru always rejected his avances, Seishiro
was always at his side everytime Subaru needed him to be while being involved
in cases he whole-heartedly participated in. He supported him always saying
something wise or kind to cheer him up, and even arrived at losing his right
eye to save him, which gradually led Subaru to realise he's actually in love
with him. Rushing to the hospital to tell him about how he felt turned out to
be his unluckiest choice, as the bet time ran out in that very moment.
Showing to Subaru his true nature, Seishiro caused him to regain his long-lost memories of their bet once again. Before Seishiro could kill the heart-wrenched and motionless boy,
his grandmother stopped him and Hokuto took his place, willingly sacrificing herself casting a spell on her killer, whose effect will be revealed only in X.
X effectively is Tokyo Babylon's sequel, despite the fact Subaru and Seishiro
aren't its main characters anymore. They got involved in the battle for
the destiny of the world in 1999, siding, as for the former, among the
Ten no Ryu (Dragons of
Heaven, wishing to preserve the Earth from destruction) and, as
for the latter, between the Chi no Ryu (Dragons
of Earth, wanting the total annihilation of mankind to allow a
complete return to Earth's original harmony, without men, nor heatred
or pollution). The presence of the two is in fact irrelevant to the (still
unknown) outcome of the battle, as they just focused on the desires they
were interested in fulfilling. Subaru - whose most inner wish was something
he was reluctant to reveal, other than something Seishiro himself discovered
to be wrong about, since revenge is not the reason why Subaru had been
searching for him during the last nine years - lost the same eye Seishiro
had lost for his sake years ago by the hand of the Chi no Ryu leader Fuuma,
who reminded him of Seishiro thanks to his special ability that causes
a person to catch a resemblance with someone they intensely want to see.
His true desire actually was something way more outstanding, as it was to be killed by Seishiro in order to be a part of him, regardless of whether Seishiro loved him or not. As for Seishiro, his
wish was exactly specular, other than the one coming true on the Rainbow Bridge, though because of a different reason. Seishiro's death was actually a suicide, as he willingly activated Hokuto's last spell, that would cause the
death of Seishiro if he tried to kill Subaru with a hand across his chest, like he did with her. Doing so, the girl had hoped they would live happily together, not daring to fight each other because of
her last technique. She was wrong: Seishiro tried to strike Subaru so that he - unaware of anything - would kill him. In fact, Seishiro died in his arms, telling him about the technique and telling him
"Subaru-kun... I... you...", whose ending was supposedly heard by Subaru only, and is probably a love confession.
The reason for such a statement comes from the fact that, in order to
create a new Sakurazukamori, the previous one must be killed from the
person he most loves. Afterwards, Fuuma revealed him Seishiro's second
wish was for his sight to be restored, as he could not bear someone other
than him caused that wound to Subaru, leaving the trace of another man
on him. in fact, Fuuma recovered Seishiro's left eye, the only remaining
fragment of his body, advising Subaru that, by accepting it, he would
become the new Sakurazukamori - which he did with no hesitation. At the
moment, X is still unfinished, so we don't know much of what will it be
of him - all we know is that he now wants to stay alive to avoid the death
of what's left of Seishiro.
Fanfictions
Such a story fascinated plenty of readers over the world. Here's where fanfiction have a role: they're nothing more than fan-written, non-official and no-profit stories about a certain series, book or film, nothing more than a fan's fantasy breaking free and pouring out to imagine the sequel to a series, just an episode of it, or even an introspective piece concerning the thoughts of a character... whatever!
Fanlistings
Fanlistings are virtual lists of fans sharing the same passion for a certain thing, a manga, a character, a singer, a book... In this case, this groups SXS fanfics fans.
